Project DANGERZONE Race Debut

After a week and a half long thrash we finished prepping our 2015 race season shop car, this 1992 Corvette shown below. We built this to compete in NASA’s TTC time trial class and are turning it into a dedicated race car with further development all year.

Our build thread is now posted on five forums (Vorshlag, corner-carvers, NASA Texas forums, GRM and SCCAforums) and you can catch up on the progress on any of those, or just click here to start the 3-part update added today.

This extensive post-race report post covers the debut event for this car. This update has dozens of pictures, videos, data and feedback from Terry after this NASA Texas event held at MSR-Houston a week ago. We also had two other TT drivers take a ride in the #DANGERZONE and they both enjoyed it immensely.

Vorshlag Reveals Secret TT Project

After announcing the budget build for a NASA Time Trial class on Dec 19th, and then picking up the car on Dec 20th, we had a lot of folks guessing what this car was. We gave a lot of hints along the way but apparently some of these were too good – because a few folks guessed our secret pretty early. After one photo clue was released Dec 26th, we got 3 solid guesses almost immediately. The jig was up!

So today, Dec 29th, we revealed the type of car we are using and what class we are building it for. You can read all about and see pictures of the car and class in this forum thread update. Thanks for your comments and guesses! Stay tuned for more updates during the 2015 NASA season.

Vorshlag tests 2015 Mustang GT on Track

Last weekend (Dec 6, 2014) Vorshlag attended the 2014 Eagles Canyon Raceway “Toy Run” track day. This is an annual track event at ECR where the entry fees are all donated to charity, and the entrants have to also bring an unwrapped toy and canned goods to get in, and the price is so low it attracts lots of folks to the track. There were a record 150 entrants at this years Toy Run, great weather, and also a brand new 2015 Mustang GT begging to be tested!

Vorshlag’s own Terry Fair was lucky enough to be able to drive a few laps in two popular Mustangs, giving us all us a head-to-head comparison of the 2015 Mustang GT Performance Pack vs a 2012 Mustang Boss302. We had already borrowed Aaron Sockwell’s 2015 GT for some testing at Vorshlag, and the shop he works at (Dusold Designs) has quite an ambitious set of plans for this “S550” chassis, which they are sharing on their Dusold Designs 2015 Mustang GT: Project 6G Facebook page.

Aaron drove the car hard all day at ECR, running tanks of fuel through the car, and was very pleased with how well it handled in stock form. Terry took a couple of laps, then ran it out of fuel, but Aaron gave him another shot. On the 2nd session he was able to put in 4 hot laps and we have in-car Video of this initial track test, with data overlay. Remember, this was a BONE STOCK Mustang, running on the as-delivered set of brake pads and tires. So, how’d the S550 do?

click image above for in-car video of the 2015 GT on track

The 2015 GT was able to put down the fastest lap ever made by Terry in a bone stock Mustang at ECR. His 2:06.01 lap (shown above or by clicking here), with a passenger, was 2+ seconds faster than he’s ever driven in any stock Mustang at ECR, including GT500s and Boss302s. Terry has lapped ECR for 1000+ laps (in HPDE events, Time Trials and W2W races since 2008), and in probably 30 different S197 Mustangs – including the Vorshlag TT3 Prepped 2011 GT and the 2012 Boss of Jerry Cecco immediately after the 2015. The best he could do in the Boss302 was a 2:10 (running somewhat worn 295mm Nitto NT05s and Vorshlag camber plates). In the past he managed a 2:08 in a “nearly stock” 2013 GT (also running 295mm Nitto NT05s and Vorshlag camber plates). That 2:06 is significantly faster than any S197 in stock form, at least for him. Terry’s best lap in the Vorshlag TT3 Mustang was a 1:55.250 back in 2013 (on the “skinny” 315mm Hoosiers. He has been 2-3 seconds per lap faster at Texas tracks in 2014 on the 335/345 Hoosiers and new aero), almost nine seconds faster than the stock S550.

Terry also drove a few laps in the Vorshlag TT3 Mustang, which is FOR SALE listed here

Please know that this was Terry’s first time: driving a 2015 GT on track (while having a conversation with Mark), as well as his first time using a GoPro video camera, some brand new video editing software, on a brand new PC, exporting from Harry’s Lap Timer, and using Dashware software to mesh it all together. Lots of tutorials, tests, and a few mistakes later and we have this 11 minute video. It looks like the data logging works intermittently on the video, and the sound is lagging about 2 seconds behind the video, but when it works the data is helpful. The lap timing is accurate and was double-checked by outside observers. Thanks to Mark Council for riding shotgun and adding some color commentary, and thanks to Aaron for letting Terry drive his car at speed!

Vorshlag has been testing with the new S550 Mustang for several weeks now and we have new Camber Plates under development, have already spec’d and sold sets of Forgestar wheels (19×10, 18×11, and more), and have some Whiteline and Magnaflow items listed on our website already. Look for a new Motion Control Suspension coilover offering for the S550 soon, with lengths spec’d by Vorshlag and valving by MaxcySpeed and Co. And of course Dusold Designs has lots of crazy plans for this chassis, including possibly twin turbocharged 5.0L power? We will share more when we see anything new, right here. And as always, look for Vorshlag updates to this in our S550 Development forum thread.

Vorshlag 2014 SEMA Show Coverage!

We finally had time to compile all of our pictures (781 in our SEMA gallery!) and thoughts and wrote this mega-sized forum update (starting here) about the cars and parts at SEMA 2014.

Vorshlag was lucky enough to have two invites to show our 2011 Mustang at SEMA, and showed it briefly in Ford’s 50th Celebration of Mustang area (above), then moved it to Optima Alley with the 100 other OUSCI 2014 competitors (below). We describe a little of what went on there in this write-up.

We took a lot of pictures that week walking the show floor, saw some amazing cars, and lots of new parts that the corner carving types out there might be interested in. Its all in there – just click this and start reading. Thanks!

New Vorshlag Location + S197 Development Updates

A lot to cover in this blog post, which is expanded upon in a giant S197 Development forum thread update starting here. This update has over 100 pictures and lots of behind the scenes information about several cars and both construction and the move to our new location.

null

That’s right – we’ve upgraded! Starting October 25th, Vorshlag started moving to it’s new, doubled-sized location. Our new address is 1703 Capital Ave, Plano, TX 75074. Phone number is the same, of course.

Our crew built all new steel front fender flares to cover the bigger 335mm tires which we wanted to use for the 2014 OUSCI event after SEMA, which look spectacular! The folks at Heritage Collision did the paint work and now our 2011 Mustang test mule looked presentable for the SEMA show.

We went ahead and made a new set of S197 wing uprights and end plates to work with the beautiful AJ Hartman Racing carbon wing element out back.

The finished result looks amazing and should produce less drag and more downforce on track.

The S197 Development forum thread update covers the final bits of work done to this ST3 prepped 2013 Mustang we worked on for about 6 weeks, transforming it from a street car to a race car. We also touch on some S550 Mustang (2015+) development and testing in the same forum post. Thanks for reading!

Vorshlag Weighs 2015 Mustang Performance Package GT 5.0 6-spd!

We finally got the call today from Corey White at Five Star Ford… their first 2015 Mustang arrived, and it was a 5.0L 6-speed Performance Package car in yellow. Faster than you can say “what’s it weigh?” we were rocketing to their dealership with our scales in the back of Truck Norris!

We got there and immediately weighed the car – and were shocked when it came in 100 pounds lighter than the magazines are reporting. 3718 pounds without “trunk junk” was impressive. The car looked damned good in yellow, too.

Read our new S550 Development Thread to see more pictures and also weights of 3 other similar cars we have taken to compare this S550 GT to. Its in good company, well under the weight of a 2014 Z/28 (by more than 100 pounds). We got to take a brief test drive as well, and you can read Terry’s first hand impressions in this post.

Mustang Products and Updates

In the latest post from our S197 Forum Build Thread we cover some new products we’re developing as well as a NASA ST3 build underway on a customer’s 2013 Mustang GT.

This car is getting a full roll cage, massive aero, and much more. We’ve removed a lot of junk from this car during the cage install, including 74 pounds of junk from within the doors (window glass, window motors, tracks, door beam and interior panels).

We have weighed numerous items that have come out of this car during race prep, which include the a/c system parts as well. Every component was photographed on a scale, for you “weight junkies” out there.

Lastly we cover a local SCCA autocross we entered in our TT3 prepped Mustang. It was raining when Amy drove, drying when Terry drove, and a sloppy mess. But we still had fun. Again, you can read all about this and more in this forum post.

Lots of S197 Parts and Race Updates

We’ve been busy working on a number of cars at the Vorshlag shop, and this forum update in our S197 build thread shows two Coyote 5.0L V8 swaps, the transformation of a street 2013 Mustang GT into a NASA ST3 race car, and more.

We’re going to be sharing the weekly customer work we do in our “This Week in the Vorshlag Shop” forum thread as well as Mustang related stuff in our “S197 Build Thread”

There are also a number of new Mustang brake cooling products we’ve developed, built and added to our website (in this S197 braking section). A lot of this and more is explained in this Brake Cooling Video, too.

Lastly, this recent post details the last 3 events we attended in our TT3 prepped Mustang. We remind folks to tune in August 15th at 7 pm CST on MAVTV to see the coverage of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Qualifier event from March that we won. We hope to see our red Mustang a bit in this hour long show, which re-airs many times on MAVTV. To find what channel this is on your TV provider, click here.

We have a lot of race events scheduled for September and October, plus a shop move to a newer/bigger space, so stay tuned. Until then, smoke em if you got em…
