Re: Building the Ultimate DSP classed BMW E36?

As to four vs. two, I'd think a call to Bimmerworld or Turner could sort out why they ran four doors. The cousin of one of our locals is BW's crew chief, if calling their CSRs doesn't get you anywhere (understandable) I can see if we can find anything out via that channel.

Anyway, for whatever it's worth, I still have the lightest DS car I've ever heard of. 4 doors, with a sunroof. Maybe I missed the DS 330 heyday or maybe the light guys haven't said anything, but that stands. BMW does list the 4 door as slightly *narrower*. (like .3" or something, not sure where that comes from, the front fenders are where my car is widest)

I'm not sure you'll need flares, Doug's fenders are simply pulled and he's run 305s. (I think I saw 295's on there at Nats this year)

        Re-e-e-eallllly..... do tell.

I am falling more and more in love with the 330Ci E46 coupe. I keep seeing more of them for sale, too. I've finally read the entire E46 wiki, which was wealth of knowledge:

        http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index.php?title=BMW_E46

        Found out the following:
        • ZSP - Sport Package is meaningless, as far as SP is concerned, as all 2001 and up coupes got the sport suspension as standard equipment
        • ZPP - Premium Package had a bunch of fluff, including the moonroof. That means - I have to avoid the ZPP
        • ZHP - Performance Package details:
        • Engine mods (new camshafts, electronics, & lighter flywheel) for 10HP & 8 ft/lb of torque increase & 6800 max RPM (from 6500).
        • 6 speed short throw shifter (for manual transmission equipped cars)
        • 3.07:1 Final drive ratio w/ manual trans instead of the standard 2.91:1. Convertibles retained the already installed 3.07 ratio.
        • Max Speed Limiter set to 155 mph (instead of 128 mph)
        • Quicker steering rack ratio. 13.7:1 versus 15.4:1 (All post 4/01 330's use the same part number steering rack)

Most important part on that whole line of cars. When I drove the BimmerHaus car that was the only downfall IMO. The steering was so slow I actually was faster than the steering pump could keep up with by the end of the slalom. Too bad that didn't translate to fast times.

Mayfield sold Paul his 4200s.... and may co-drive that car next year... which would be REALLY good.

Re: Building the Ultimate DSP classed BMW E36?

One of the big negatives of the E36 and one of the possible positive of the E46 is the gearing. The only realistic gear to use in the E36 is the 3.15, the other two options are 2.91 and 3.91. The 2.91 sucks even worse than the 3.15 and the 3.91 is crazy short. Something like 40MPH at the top of 2nd. The 3.15 is soggy on the low end and I vary rarely hit the rev limiter in 2nd much less shift to 3rd in my DSP car.

Taking a quick look in the ETK, between the manual, automatic and AWD E46 variations, you can run about any gear you can imagine. 3.07, 3.15, 3.23, 3.38, 3.46 and 3.64 are all options. You could "fine tune" your gear for a particular course if you really wanted to!

            Just a thought.

It should be noted that while the wiki seems to muddle whether or not the ZHP had a faster rack, it definitely did. I've driven them back to back, and the ZHP rack is niiiice.

Yep, I remember you complaining about the slow steering on that car. I saw that 13.7:1 ratio rack in the ZHP Perf Package listing and knew that any DSP E46 would definitely benefit from that swap. Its not as fast as the 12.9:1 (?) ratio Z3 rack that Teucci swapped into the V8 car, but its close.

He ran the 285/30/18 Hoosier on 18x10 ET25 SSR Comp wheels... I know some guys are moving up to the 305/30/18 in the rear, and we just so happen to have a used pair of Hoosiers in that size in the shop, so I'll at least mock it up if I go with the E46.

What ever happened to this car? Also, can you U/B the ZHP rack onto a non-ZHP car or would you have to do the complete ZHP transformation? I'm just not up on SP rules that much.

It is still for sale. The customer spent more than $65k building it at the time so I don't think he wants a reasonable amount for it yet. Who knows, maybe though!
