I ask as I recently acquired a '87 325is that I'm freshing and will be prepping for DE, TT, etc. and would like to run AST's on it since I didn't get the chance to on my M3. It's a shared project with a friend which is making it more affordable for both of us.

    Thanks - Jon
We have an extra set of E30 AST4100 (front has inserts, as shown above) now - send me a PM - and we have more inbound from Holland. I will make sure we add this to our shopping cart soon.

The E30 AST 4200 and 4300 offerings are more difficult, as they require OEM hubs to build the new strut bodies into... the joy of E30 front suspension!

                AST4100 for E30

Update... I just added an entry for the Vorshlag shopping cart to show an E30 AST4100 kit with springs, struts, shocks, rear shock mounts, and camber plates + perches. We had professional pictures taken of the kit and components but I haven't linked to them yet (so the pictures are from the install gallery, which weren't very detailed).

                http://www.vorshlag.com/index.php?cPath=1_17_65

Note: The springs needed for these kits are an unusual length (120mm or 140mm) and are on order form AST, so we're probably a week away from being able to ship these kits.

I will also add an entry for a kit w/o camber plates... but why would you want to do that?!

                    Re: Vorshlag 1991 BMW 318is

After a last minute alignment Friday (thanks Eurosport!) Amy and I volunteered to help set-up some auto-x and drift courses at Mineral Wells for some local 240SX guys. That then gave us the opportunity to do some testing on the E30 before the car has entered its first competition event this season (our previously planned test session had been rained out).

We set-up our standard 30 second test course and drove our '91 318is with the all new suspension set-up for the first time on a course. After various shock settings didn't fix it, a significant spring rate change in the rear helped to calm down the chassis. Further timed testing (about 66 runs in total) with both drivers helped chase down valving and other parameters for the base set-up with the Hankooks (to be replaced by Bridgestones in 15" and 16" sizes shortly). The E30 even did well in head-to-head comparisons with the other cars there on the large 1+ mile course they were running, so maybe this chassis has some promise.

                    Pics: picture gallery

Weather was a little wacky - it was 31°F and windy in the morning but slowly warmed up to 75°F and sunny in the afternoon. Typical Texas winter day. Running around shagging cones, driving 30+ runs, and thrashing on the suspension set-up all day didn't help this bout of flu I have had for the past week, and the day after the all day test event I am wiped out. But the testing was invaluable and well worth it.
                    • Alignment: Camber -3.7°F & -1.5°R. Caster +9.0°. Toe 1/4" in Rear, 1/8" out Front.
                    • Shocks: AST4100 with 60mm coilovers
                    • Camber Plates: Vorshlag E30 plates
                    • Springs: 750#/in Rear changed mid-day to 570 #/in
                    • Wheels: 15x7" Kazera, 13.9 pounds
                    • Tires: Hankook 225/50/15 (temporary), 35 psi
                    • Sway Bars: Stock 318is
                    • Limited Slip: Not allowed in this chassis, this class

The tricky part was getting settings that allowed the car to have traction on corner exit without a limited slip. The shocks worked like magic on this semi-bumpy course and the settings we got down to should give us adjustment for other surfaces. Still, we will be much more confident once we run this against other autocrossers, PAX, etc. Saturday's testing was against the clock only, for the most part. It might still be slow relative to the STS class dominant Hondas... don't know yet.

A new set of 16x7.5" wheels are due any day, as are two sets of RE-01Rs (15" and 16").

The 318is didn't come with a limited slip as standard equipment?

Interesting. So at one point the "s" in "is" represented a sports package on E30 models. Springs, bars, seats, LSD, etc. Did that change at some point?

I thought the "s" just meant 2 door during that period.

No, the "s" meant sport package. On E36s they changed it and "i" denoted 4 doors and "is" denoted 2 doors. So E30s were available in 2 door 325i models, but they never offered a 4 door 325is. They were all 325i models.
