"and you thought One Lap took balls..."

    First off, the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WJdC28j9Vo

Notice the 2 Cobra Mustangs, an LS1 Firebird, and a C5 Z06?? Sweet.

It's the closest thing we in north America have to a tarmac rally. Consider it our version of the long gone infamous Targa Fiorio in Italy. It has been running now for a few years and growing in popularity more and more every year. Newfoundland is a province in Canada, way up almost in Greenland! Supposed to be incredibly beautiful countryside, coastline (and yes, Targa cars have ended up in the ocean!), quaint little villages that racers compete right in the middle of.

    DOH!

Two local club racers, Nick Papayianis and Will Atkinson, entered an E30 M3 (red one, above) and were up to 2nd overall in their first rally... then they crashed into a house on Day 3! This is their blog: http://odysseyms.blogspot.com/

Lone Star BMWCCA thread about them: http://www.lscbmwcca.org/forum/Topic5918-7-1.aspx

      Re: Targa Newfoundland 2007

I just read the rules for Targa and the only place the LS1 E36 would fit is "Open" category, which has a 1750 pound minimum weight. Some crazy cars could show up... but if an old 2002 BMW can win Overall, I guess not.

Expensive though... $5000 entry fee + you are liable for $1000CDN to damage to houses and such, and some special medical and automotive insurance requirements. The week long competition covers 2200 KM in the competition car and about 500 KM of that is at speed.

Some confusing rules surrounding the "maximum average course speed" and associated penalties. I will have to ask Will and Nick about this (it didn't sound right - might only apply to the "Touring" category of drivers that aren't gong all out).

Getting there is also a major chore. They drove 40 straight hours to get to the coast then took an 8 hour ferry ride to get to Newfoundland, then another 6-7 hours to traverse that province! The ferry ride back was 15 hours and they've been driving for 3 days to get home!!! They are, of course, worn out. Its easily a 2 week long commitment for the driver and co-driver and you better have at least 2 crew members there with you to follow along in the support vehicle (truck/trailer/lots of spares).

      Again, expensive.

        Re: Targa Newfoundland 2007

Gary and I looked into this two years ago. I asked about Scratcher and they said 'bring it up and we'll take a look at it'.

Serious financial and time committment, but it could likely end up being one of those things that sticks with you for a lifetime.

I talked extensively with two folks who had both done it and learned a TON. I'd love to do it, just not sure how.
