  • SCCA 2007 event # 2, Pennington

The return of Paul's STi. AST debut for the Vorshlag M3 and STi (with Fitz driving). And the 5th run mega EVO machine!

Pics (good ones! using hanchey's pimpy SLR Nikon + 200mm lens): http://vorshlag.smugmug.com/gallery/2747397#145994130

These pics all blow-up HUGE at Smugmug. The last of is me driving (prev M3 pics are Amy) and the tire deformation and camber once viewed up close was informative.

    a quick overview:

STU was an all-Vorshlag Top 5!

    1. mccall (pulled a mad 5th run, dropping 1 full second!)
    2. fair (edit: .119 back)
    3. paul (.359 back - .4 sec drop on his 5th run)
    4. amy (.550 back - missing 2nd gear 2 times??)
edit: 5. Gabby eeked past Fitz
    6. fitz in the stockest car in the class (AST shocks/springs + hand-built Vorshlag rear c. plates only) this car won't be this stock for much longer...
    7-10+. Henry, etc.

    results soon.

Pics look so much better than with pocket camera. Gotta post these on the website! Next time we'll take Amy's 400mm Nikon lens for even more up close and personal action pics.

Nope. I have to spend time with my family every now and then. Besides, I hate Pennington.

STU is kinda soft this year I think.

                    Re: SCCA 2007 event # 2, Pennington

Crap, we got karted! Looks like Madderash (7th in pax, but a somewhat weak pax too) got it done with a fast ESP time. Stuart Maxy looked fast in the 911GT3, as did the SS Lotii. John the BStock RX8 guy popped me, too. Hmm... musta been off the pace if I was 4 tenths behind BStock. Crap.

Gotta get the M3 much more seriously prepared if I'm gonna keep up. McCall's and Hanchey's AWD boost buggies don't even have power yet! All I can do is more weight and more tire on the BMW. Wish I could get the 18" wheels in from D-Force quicker than 6 weeks... that's killing me! Definitely going to try the Bridgestones in 265/18s, race seats, and some other secret suspension mods. The action pictures showed us something that needs improvement (on lots of cars!).

More event pictures of the M3, cleaned up and resized:

These wheels are of course 17x9 D-Force LTWs on our '97 M3 with 255/40/17 Yokohama Advan AD07 (measure 265mm), 10mm spacer up front, rolled rear fenders, AST coil-over monotube adjustables, -and 4.2° of camber up front. 98% of peak lateral was 1.15g, 98% of braking was 1.10g - not too shabby for street tires. But not good enough!

Note: Gabby has just switched from Falkens to Bridgestones and has closed the gap from where he usually places. He liked the tires a lot.

Note 2: The 2nd pic from the top is of me, others are all Amy. Note the difference in car lean, tire deformation, and outside air gap on the left front tire. I was going ~10mph faster here and throughout this section, and put .8 seconds on her in the oval portion of the course. This course was very grip biased, as the karts and mod cars proved.

That loop was deceptively fast and it took me a long time to even get close to figuring that out. I also thought the part that dumped you back into the start area was somewhat dangerous with cars pointing right at the next car staged to run and pretty close (although within the legal min distance) distance-wise. Lots of speed (if you were driving it properly) and not much runoff room. I was nervous going through there every time and my times showed it for sure.

or I dropped .544 from my best raw time (which ever way you want to slice that apple)

                            This is my favorite pic:

When you blow it up to full size you can really see how hard the tires are working- http://vorshlag.smugmug.com/gallery/...146023674-O-LB

I definitely think my 3.5 neg camber is enough if just barely! We need a tire cam!! (ala V8 Supercar vid)

For Hanchey's car, 98% of peak lateral acceleration was 0.90g. Time for some tires!
