Is it just me or does the coupe just look weird? Personally I'd rather have the hatch 3-door or 5-door.

Yeah, that's just weird looking. But I'm sure they're afraid to bring hatchback to the U.S. market.

I like the hatch better, too. But with the fundamental flops of recent high end German hatchbacks, I think they are being wise. C230 hatch = bombed. VW hasn't had big sales of the R32 either.

I don't know if there is a particular reason, but I do know A3 sales in January were down 62.5% over January '06.
