Once again, the Aussies crank out another cool concept. (Except that it's meant for drifting). If my little "calculator" is right, that thing has over 500hp and over 500 lb-ft of torque! :-O

This article, and the cancellation of the Pontiac GTO, really hits home how Lutz's "new product" plans have failed GM.

This SUCKS because I thought the GTO was part of the life line, a way to turn around the GM bohemoth around. It made sense - give us some of the cool RWD V8 iron that the Aussies have been hogging for years. I wanted to believe Lutz.

But they somehow took a plain looking car and made it look blander. No tarted up "HSV" version to halo the model. The big curb weight hurt performance, and a cramped trunk hurt usability, both partly from half-@ssed solutions to Federal crash re-engineering. The weak U.S. dollar compared to Aussie currency made the price creep up from targeted mid 20's to low 30's. Shipping delays kept inventories low in the beginning when the media focus was greatest.

It all conspired to doom the GTO to dismal sales (sub 12K/yr). A 2nd year makeover was too little, too late (even 50 more horses couldn't prop up sales).

Well, it can't hold up to 2007 crash standards, so the cancellation wasn't really a surprise. Just a more official notice. They're still reportedly working on a replacement for probably '08 or '09.

I consider the Solstice Lutz's barometer, and now that I've seen a few on the street I'm impressed. '07 Tahoes look great, too.

Interesting note from my friend Rob, who has a '04 GTO and is "plugged-in" so to speak heavily in the GTO-world.

"Even before it was made, it was only supposed to be a 3 year run. The Monaro actually continued on because of the GTO. The Commodore has already changed over and a new Monaro/GTO is supposed to come out for '08 or '09. Also, they made 15,7xx in '04.

So this really isn't breaking news as it was already a known fact before production started.

I tend to think car connection got it wrong as well because back when I was thinking about getting one in '04 I, too, remember the 3-year plan when the GTO was released because it was supposed to be a stop-gap until the new Zeta platform came out.

I'll knotch this one up to a piss-poor car reporter yet again trying to use misinformation as a reason to bash GM.
