  • Best STU legal clutch?

Perhaps some of you have taken the time to research specs on which OE equivalent replacement clutch is the best for the money. Sachs? OE? other? Best clamping and/or lightest?

I need to put a new clutch in my car soon and I'm leaning towards Sachs, but thought I'd see if you guys had any insight as I'm still new to BMW's.

If only there were legal upgraded ones (M5, etc). oh well. Stock seemed to work fine, until it started to slip.

    Thanks in advance,

As I understand the rules you have to use the OEM clutch.

We have a Sachs in our car. No issues. It is 1.5 years old now. It is a 3 disc C/C clutch. That's ok right?

Funny guy. Sorry Jon but only OEM factory clutches are permitted in ST classes.

I think he knows that. He just wanted to know what options he had for BMWs. Not every clutch mfg's definition of OEM is the same. Autozone OEM clutch vs. Sachs for instance.

Ah, I wasn't aware of the aftermarket OEM replacements for BMWs. For Evos, the only option is to buy one from Mitsubishi I believe. No biggie.

Hanchey is right. I'm very familar with the rule set. Just curious if anyone did a comparison. I know Andy Hollis did when he built his STS2 Miata and found a noteable amount of weight differences between the eligible clutches on the market.

You VM guys seem hardcore enough to have possibly done this, which is why I'm asking here. I suppose Mike S. may have taken this extra step as well, I'll email him and see.

Who makes your stock clutch? For Subaru it is Exedy and you can get an OE replacement from them. I've even seen some OE equivalent clutches from clutch masters.

Huh, honestly I don't know. With my car having only 3500 miles I haven't had to worry about it yet. I just did some quick searching and found an Exedy OEM clutch kit as well as an Ebay "clutchmasters" one but I really don't know anything about them or if they are truly STU legal.

When it comes time to do mine, I'll definitely look into it more. Thanks for opening my eyes a bit more.

We definitely like weighing things. In this case, I just wanted something that was going to last. Let me know what you find out.

Jon, you need to re-read Andy's comments. He used a clutch that was identical to one he knew at one time was specified by Mazda.

If a supposed "OE-equivalent" clutch is significantly lighter or has significantly more clamping force than OE, it is not "OE-equivalent". Just get the OE clutch and be done with it. If you did happen to find one that would provide a significant performance advantage (not likely), it would be illegal.

That is correct. Fortunetly for us STi owners, it is a pretty good clutch. =)

I re-read Andy's comments and understand it is a fine line. Perhaps I Should have never mentioned clamping differences and stuck strictly on weight. I won't be doing any testing, just thought I'd see if others have as it seems some do look for every possible legal advantage they can (andy's build is a prime example).
