I may get lambasted for opining this way but I think this is a FANTASTIC idea IF and ONLY IF it were to replace the taxation of gasoline.

Paying for use of the road... What a phenomenal idea. Currently, people are getting taxed based on how fuel conscious their car is. So the guy in the Corolla pays way less tax than the guy in the Hummer to use the same amount of road. Why not tax them equally (all men are created equal after all, right?) for the amount of road they use and let them make their own decision on whether or not they want to foot the bill to buy more gas based on gas mileage? That seems like the more fair way to do it. The gas tax was instilled back when all cars got roughly the same gas mileage. With the greater disparity between vehicles now, a use tax is a better idea, IMO. Pay for the roads you drive on and for how much you drive on them, not for what kind of car you own and what kind of mileage it gets.

I agree, but I don't think just taxing based on how many miles you drive is enough. I think there should be different tax rates based on the GROSS weight of the vehicle. It only makes sense that a Honda Accord is not going to cause as much road damage as a dump truck or semi. Let the companies who cause the most damage to roadways pay a larger portion to repair them.

On another note, with the sudden rise in the number of tollways in this area, we kind of have a pay as you go system being emplemented as it is.
