Some cities are leaps and bounds ahead of others when it comes to alternatives to the automobile. New York leads the nation with less than one-fourth of workers driving alone and the lowest ratio of cars to commuters. But its workers also travel for the most amount of time.

NYC is SO progressive! Man, it was built that way. If you don't live in non-urban places, don't write about them. Public transport usage is down because people gave it shot when gas prices first went up and discovered that it still sucks, is slow, and dirty, and not necessarily safe.

This isn't the USSR so yeah, people aren't getting paid to ride the train so they're going to drive solo. How many people do you know who live near a coworker? Who wants to not only cut an additional 1-1.5 hours out of their free time but also spend that time dealing with public transport and...the public?

Sprawl means very few people live near work...and if they do, with job turnover, they won't for long. The cities aren't built for efficient commuting so stop staring mouth agape at the rising trends. It's rising because cities are getting bigger with population growth.

What about neveau villages? The people who LIVE in Addison Circle or the Shops at Legacy do not WORK in Addison Circle or the Shops at Legacy. There are no real grocery stores nearby either so the only village living they're doing is walking to get their dry cleaning and dine at overpriced restaurants once in a while.

Gone are the days when a village ran itself with people who live in it. Those days were gone before most towns west of the Appalachian mountains came to be. Everyone has a specific job and it's across town. Bleh.

My commute: 10 miles in 15+/-2 minutes...or it's free. Of course, I drive around 9 and 6. 30 minutes earlier and add 5 minutes of clogged traffic. It should get better once construction on 75 is done and the express lane from Allen to south Plano opens...assuming more than three cars have 2+ passengers in them. It should be a toll lane, not dependent on imaginary carpoolers most of whom drive slow and clog it up anyway.
