Wow... the little E30 apparently traded hands once again during the past 6 months, and went up for sale again. It wasn't well advertised and sat unsold for about a month.. price dropped from %5200 to $4000 to $3250, and McCall JUMPED on it last night, hours after hearing about the latest price drop. Melinda and JAson brought it home last night and its there, with some nice little upgrades and only one more bit of new body damage (to join the plethora of whiskey dents and scrapes on this faded but otherwise straight and rust free car). Here's some pics Amy and I took late last night, moments after they got home. It hasn't been McCall Cleaned (tm) yet, so don't hold that against him.

The Vorshlag E30 is back! Jason and Melinda McCall acquired the little 1.8 liter bomber on June 3, 2009

So stoked they got this thing! There was a bit of a frenzy to buy it once the price bottomed out yesterday, but Jason was the first one to show up with Cash Money, and money talks.

The 318is joins the McCall's overflowing garage with an MZ3-LS1, Pontiac G8 GXP, Jeep and 3/4 ton truck

They are going to use it for Melinda to autocross and open track with, and Jason may even run it for a bit until the MZ3-LS1 is being completed. Congrats!

I called the guy to get it but just blew me off since there was someone looking at the car after he got off work (think it was mark)... So congratulations Jason!

Damn. McCall came close to the trophies this weekend. Great job to him! With a large enough class, looks like the car has a fighting chance. Any more feedback about tuning needed? VERY interesting!

Correction... McCall got f$cked. He was in the 4th trophy spot. Impound handed out the final results and he was 4th. Trophy presentation and they don't call his name. Turns out that someone decided to remove a cone-call from another driver which bumped McCall down.

So... lesson? Final Results are not Final Results... even when tagged as 'Final Results'

That almost sounds shady. If it's not on the final results sheet, too bad. You had time to protest. Under those circumstances, even more props to McCall!

Did you guys ever get the rear end solved in this car (sans LSD) before you sold it? I've had some ideas with regards to a RWD ST cars and I want to make sure we can tune the rear of the car to get maximum lateral grip and still put the power down effectively (which I'd need against the EF Civics). I might want to call you guys up to see if there are any options on the AST side of what I'm looking at...

The long droop rear shocks helped quite a bit, but it still could use an LSD. If he takes the car to FSP (if its allowed there next year) he'll do a LSD first...

Jason's been tinkering with the idea of moving this car into Street Prepared Right now its dubiously placed into DSP, where it probably doesn't belong, but we're going to start a letter writing campaign to have it moved to FSP... where it will still be heavy but probably more competitive. If that gets approved the 318is will get big flares and wheels/tires.

One type of flare that works well on these boxy little Bimmers is called a "box flare". Here's a somewhat crude example:

box flares on the "Dirt E30 team" entry, from the $2009 GRM Challenge

Yes, that looks like they made the flares out of paper mache... and they just might have been... but these could be replicated in steel for very little money and they'd look a lot better. I'd think you'd want to section the stock fender, moving the lower arch openings outwards, and then "box" in the extensions with sheet metal to fill out the room needed for the bigger wheels & tires.

Those flares aren't bad but I wonder if by going that route if you are adding extra metal to the car.

Doing something more like this could be simpiler:

That's pretty much the wheel/tire package I would want to run.

I'm not a big fan of the 15" route and I think these flares are just too small:

I also don't like the look of wheels sticking out either. I'd much prefer them t****** up just inside the fender.

If, and only if, the car gets moved to FSP then of course I will start with the bolt-on fenders like these:

Yeah, maybe using the word "simple" around Alex and his DSP E30 would be a bad idea. Those flares are the work across 4-5 years. He started with hammered "flares", then cut them completely, then molded metal fenders on and finally had them smoothed, polished and finished off. That car has gone through a lot and it wasn't "simple". It is, however, beautiful and worth the work, imho...just like the Vorshlag LS1 318is. Lots of work, but the result is beautiful and unique.

hehe, ok "simple" was in more reference to the look of the lines on the car vs. the work involved to create them. Also, he did start with a 4-dr which is much harder to work with on the rear fenders vs. my 2-dr.
