  • FOR SALE: Vorshlag 1997 BMW M3, no sunroof, cloth, 5-spd coupe

The M3 that helped start Vorshlag Motorsports, and that we've owned for the past 7+ years, is being sold.

    • 1997 BMW M3, no options car, no sunroof, with the M Hurricane Alcantara cloth interior (rare), 146k miles, SCCA history, Vorshlag test bed for 6 years, $13,500 obo.

This silver E36 M3 has been "in the Vorshlag family" since 2004 - since before there was a Vorshlag. After a 4 year hiatus from autocrossing I got back into the sport with a co-drive from Hanchey in '04, we took it to the Solo Nationals in 2005 and started Vorshlag that year. We have been developing, tweaking, and maintaining this rare M3 ever since.

This was the E36 development test bed for Vorshlag and AST parts for the past six years. We've had all sorts of shocks on this car - AST Sportline I's, the very first ever production AST 4100s, the first ever prototypes AST 4200, and some rare AST 4300s with remotes. The car now has new production AST 4200 double-adjustable shocks.

    2007 Nationals set-up, with 18x10 D-Force wheels and 265/35/18 Bridgestone RE01R tires

SCCA Solo Accolades in this car:
    • 2007 STU Ladies National Championship, Amy Fair
    • 2006 STU Ladies National Championship, Amy Fair
    • 2006 STU Open 2nd Place, 2005 STU 6th place, Terry Fair
    • 2005 STU Open TToD Day 1, Brian Hanchey, driver couldn't hold it together Day 2

    Early 2007 season set-up, with 17x9 D-Force wheels (16.6 lbs) and 255/40/17 Yokohama Advan AD07s

    Goals for this Car:
    • Daily drive-able, comfortable, tastefully modified but as stock looking as possible
    • To be the best handling BMW on street tires. Period.
    • Product tester for Vorshlag and AST
    • SCCA and BMW autocross competitive
    • Flawless maintenance, everything works perfectly
    • Following the matra of "doing what works, not just what's popular"

    Maintenance

    • Every part in the cooling system is new - hoses, belts, radiator, water pump, belts, reservoir, cap, & t-stat housing
    • Every bushing in the car has been replaced
    • The clutch/pressure plate are new Sachs parts (Summer 2011)
    • The transmission's internal shifter bushing cup kits have been replaced (Summer 2011)
    • New air conditioning compressor & drier (Summer 2011)
    • Window regulators replaced
    • Driveshaft bushings/bearings replaced
    • Oil pump nut welded (for reliability)
    • All shifter bushings/clips replaced
    • Everything works!

    Interior Features

The lack of sunroof and the interior are the most distinctive aspects of this car, and part of what makes it such an unusual find. This car has the ultra-rare BMW optional "M Hurricane" cloth/Alcantera interior. Everything is exceptionally clean and detailed.

Click thumbnails above for larger images
    • "M Hurricane" cloth/Alcantera interior - in excellent shape!
    • "Vader" sport seats with manual adjustments (lighter than power, won't break). No wear, rips, tears, nothing.
    • Custom installed, color matching black "micro-suede" (alcantera) headliner
    • Black carpet is in perfect condition - no "heel wear"
    • New BMW black floor mats (Winter 2010)
    • Factory radio died. Twice. Replaced with JVC radio, integrated Bluetooth (for easy smart phone tunes from MP3, Pandora, etc), with add-on iPhone/iPod wired interface (see picture here). As much as I dislike aftermarket stereos, after two OEM units I had to go aftermarket.
    • The radio has a handsfree microphone and USB interface (discretely mounted in front of shifter in an unused "switch blank" insert).
    • New rear speakers, to replace OEM units that failed (Spring 2011)

    Exterior Features

Again, very clear car with exceptional paint. Also, for a 1996-1999 M3, to not have a sunroof is incredibly rare. There are no surprises - this car is a lot cleaner than any 1997 model has a right to be. Garage kept, spoiled car.

Click thumbnails above for larger images
    • No sunroof! More headroom for taller drivers, 32 pounds lighter, stiffer
    • Silver metallic exterior
    • Front fenders contours bodyworked/painted and lower front portions of side skirts repainted (Fall 2011), perfect match, very high quality work by BMW experienced paint/body man using Spies Heckler paint (German)
    • No dings, scratches or surprises - this paint looks GOOD
    • Motion Motorsports aluminum undertray (replaces the five plastic pieces that always break)
    • BMW foglight delete panels
    • New BMW lower lip splitter to replace original unit
    • Euro M3 (glass!) front headlight housings with aftermarket HID bulbs. Much brighter, no faded plastic
    • Front license delete panel (front plate was NEVER installed)
    • New windshield (Winter 2010) to replace for typical wear - its spotless

What YOU Could Do With This Car

This car has been autocross dozens of times from 2004-2007, and is extremely well sorted as it sits. The SCCA SEB could put this car back into STX class at any moment - this would be the car to attack that class with! It is already proven in STU, with years of development and sorting, so it could be a short cut to the next STX entry - if it gets moved. You could go have fun right now in STU class; just put on some 140-200 treadwear tires. The M3 has been tracked 3 times, and the new owner could have a blast in NASA TTC track events, or just be fast in any HPDE group. Drive it to work every day, drive to the track, no worries. This car was made to be the best of both worlds.

For more details email us at sales (at) vorshlag (dot) com or call us at here at Vorshlag at 972-422-7170. We can schedule test rides/drives/viewings with a 24 hour notice at our shop in Plano, Texas. Yes, it is priced higher than many other E36 M3s out there - but just try to find another 1996-1999 M3 with no sunroof and cloth interior, with this much history, in this shape. It doesn't exist. I would prefer not to discuss pricing until a potential buyer has at least seen the car in person, but feel free to call for more information. This car is very special to me, my wife and Vorshlag, but we have 6 cars, it is not getting driven (just stays in the garage), so this M3 finally needs to go to a new home.

    Thanks!

The last pictures I will ever take of our 1997 BMW M3.

Last drive in the M3, one more time to the shop

            Last side-by-side parking with the E46 330 and M3

            Ready for lift off!

The guy that transported the car gave it a thorough inspection (he has to mark any existing scratches or dings) and said it was the cleanest 1997 anything he had ever seen.

The car is now in the hands of the new owner in San Fran.

            Thanks,
