  • STU begins!

    Reprinted from Fastrack April 2004.

    http://www.scca.com/_Filelibrary/Fil...4-fastrack.pdf

    - The SEB discussed and approved the addition of two supplemental classes to National Tour events; STS2 and STU. These classes reflect what the SEB envisions to be the continued growth of the Street Touring
category, and are being evaluated in conjunction with evaluation of the feasibility of combining several less-subscribed classes and of restructuring some less-subscribed preparation categories. Reflecting the success of the ST concept both nationally and regionally, the two supplemental
classes were developed as the next logical steps in the progression of this category.

Variants of one or both of these classes are already being offered in several regions across the country. STS2 will follow the STS rule set, but the eligible cars will be restricted to two-seaters with engine displacements of 1.8 liters or less. This class will provide a home for a number of popular vehicles, including the Honda CRX and del Sol, Mazda Rx-7 (nonturbo,
'79-'92) and Miata ('90-'97), Toyota MR2 ('85-'89), as well as other similar vehicles.

STS category rules 14.1 to 14.10 apply. Further, as in STS, only original equipment viscous limited slip differentials are legal in STS2. Excluded vehicles include Lotus (all), Mazda Miata (99+), and Toyota MR2 ('91-'95
and '00+). STU will follow the STX rule set, but will raise the displacement limit for otherwise STX-legal vehicles to 3.1 liters for forced induction and to unlimited displacement for natural aspiration. To accommodate the
greater power of these vehicles, restrictions on wheel width are lifted and the maximum tire width will be increased to 275 for front or rear wheel drive vehicles (but will remain at 245 for AWD vehicles). Other than these
limited exceptions, the STX rule set as described in 14.11 applies. This class extends the Street Touring concept to cars including the Audi S4, BMW M3 (E36), Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Neon SRT-4, Ford Mustang, Mazda RX-8, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8, Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac GTO,
Subaru WRX STi, Volvo S60 R, and Toyota Supra. Excluded vehicles include the E46 M3 and the E39 M5.

In conjunction with the planned evolution of this category and of the sport as a whole, these two supplemental classes will not be considered for full national status until 2007. One or both classes could then potentially
be recommended for full national status provided that rules stability is attained, member participation is strong, and the classes continue to reflect the needs of the current enthusiast market.

    Re: STU begins!

Great idea to put all the STU rules/etc together here. Brilliant!

Does anyone have a complete copy of all the initial and subsequent STU rules available that can be posted here together?

Jason asked for it, he can't read "confusionise" and I wanted it in English.

Thanks Paul but ah, no I'm sorry I didn't make myself more clear as I was talking in "confusionise" myself

I was just hoping someone would list ALL STU rules (meaning STX/BSP rules +) so we have a resource here to read, interpret, and discuss all mods, etc against. We are trying to make Vorshlag the home of STU aren't we?

              Re: STU begins!

              Here's an example:

              STREET TOURING CATEGORY
              ITEM The following proposal is
being recommended to the BOD, effective
              01/01/2006:
Change 14.2.F to read as follows:
              Addition of spoilers, splitters, body
              kits, rear wings and non-functional
scoops/vents is allowed. The intent of
this allowance is to accommodate commonly
              available appearance kits, and
replicas thereof, which have no significant
              aerodynamic function at Solo II
speeds. Body kits are limited to bumper
covers, valances, side skirts, and fender
flares. Standard parts may not be
removed except for the substitution of
              spoilers, rear wings
              , bumper covers and
valances. Rear wings must attach only
aft of the rear wheel centerline. Total
surface area of all spoilers, splitters and
rear wing may not exceed 8 square feet
as seen from above (see 12.9).
Substitution of rear spoilers or wings
must retain any original third brake
              light functionality unless otherwise
              equipped
. No underbody panels may be
added or substituted. The drilling of
holes for the purpose of mounting these
              pieces is permitted.
Comment: In addition to stating intent,
              F-272 SPORTSCAR NOVEMBER 2005
this rewrite defines "rear wing" and
"body kit", and removes the word "etc."
              from the list of allowances.

                    Re: STU begins!

In working on my sponsorship package, I put all the STU rules together. And now for your reading/debating/protesting enjoyment:

What is the Street Touring Class (STU)?

Started in 1997, this is one of SCCA’s fasted growing solo 2 category which includes Street Touring Sport (STS), Street Touring Sport 2 seater (STS2), Street Touring Xtra (STX), and Street Touring Ultra (STU). This the only category that does NOT allow R-compound tires – only real “street” tires with a UTQG treadwear rating of 140 or higher.

STU consists of sedans / coupes with four seats and normally aspirated engines of any displacement normally aspirated or turbo / supercharged engines up to 3.1 L.

                    Modifications:

                    All stock category allowances
Limited slip differentials allowed (including aftermarket) for 2WD cars
                    High-flow “cat”
Pedal kits and other interior trim
Front Seats (15 pounds minimum weight each)
Rub strips, emblems, and mud flaps removed.
Body kits, spoilers and wings added
                    Shocks/struts
Drilled and slotted larger brake calipers and rotors
                    Braided DOT brake lines
                    Anti-roll bars, front and rear
                    Suspension bushings (non-metallic)
                    Lowered suspensions unit standard-type springs
                    Camber kits, plates, or bolts
Traction bars, torque arms, panhard rods
                    Strut bars, 2-point only
                    Battery relocated
Air filter systems up to throttle body or compressor inlet
                    Headers, emissions compliant
                    Engine computers (ECU/PCM) reprogrammed
                    Shifter kits
                    Accessory drive pulleys
                    Motor mounts (non-metallic)
                    No wheel restrictions
Tires for 2WD cars up to 275mm wide (245 for AWD)

Example of included cars: Audi S4, BMW M3 (E36), Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge SRT-4, Ford Mustang, Mazda RX-8, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Pontiac Firebird / Trans Am and GTO, Subaru Impreza WRX STi, Volvo S60 R, Toyota Supra

                    Excluded cars: BMW M3 (E46) and M5 (E39)
