Re: BMW E30/36/46 Coilover Conversion Kit

We see a lot of enthusiasts and racers that get into a sports car and quickly want better handling and track performance. Most folks realize quickly what matters most: their springs and shocks. The modifications most folks take usually come in several stages, most times "throwing away" (selling everything and starting over) the previous setup and buying something better to replace it with. The iterations tend to go in this order:
    1. Cheap "sporty" shocks and OEM lowering springs (lowered, but too soft)
    2. Better twin tube or cheap Asian Import coilovers and higher rate springs (flatter cornering, but less than ideal ride quality)
    3. Real adjustable monotubes and even higher rate springs (improving ride and track performance over the previous iterations.

Lots of sports car enthusiasts and new racers want to have the advantages of adjustable coilover suspension but cannot afford a full kit that includes good, adjustable, monotube dampers (like ASTs) at first. Why not do everything in the coilover kit except the dampers, and just "use what you have" initially, and upgrade the shocks later? That's why we made this kit...

The Vorshlag Coilover Conversion Kit will get you many of the advantages of our AST coilover kits, without the actual AST dampers. Instead of wasting money on cheaper, low-end dampers that you might not want for long once you have them, this will get you in the door and on your way to a full AST coilover kit for a good bit less money up front.

Advantages to the Vorshlag Coilover Conversion Kit:
    • A lower stance, with ride height adjustability front and rear
    • Corner weight balance adjustability
    • Nearly infinite spring rate choices (OEM style lowering springs tend to be fairly soft and only available in 1 or 2 rates)
    • Additional camber adjustment range due to the smaller spring diameter (OEM BMW springs have 110 to 120mm ID springs vs. 63.5mm for this kit)
    • Camber-Caster adjustability with the best BMW plates and perches available (optional)
    • Contains the exact same parts that can later be re-used in an AST coilover kit including all 4 coilover springs, rear ride height adjusters, and the (optional) Vorshlag camber plates.
    • The only part from this kit that doesn't get re-used on an AST coilover kit is the front strut threaded platform.

We consider this kit as the "gateway" that lets you get into a full set of AST coilovers in 2 easy steps, instead of paying for the AST kit all at once. Some people may never swap out their dampers, of course, and that's OK. We've shown this kit to a few folks already and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Stay tuned for more kits along these lines for other car models.

I must be the average enthusiast then! I bought my car and added H&R sport springs and Bilsteins pretty quickly. Lately I find myself gazing lustfully at the AST offerings, but the time isn't right for that.

The rear kit is pretty self explanatory, but I have a few questions about the front kit. Will they work with the Bilsteins? How much welding (if any) is involved? Will there be a choice of spring rates? Finally, will the kits be offered seperately, or as a front/rear package?

      Thanks!

Here are pictures of how the rear spring + nylon seat + ride height adjuster work in the stock spring location:

We'll post pictures of the assembled front set-up next. These will work with Bilstein, Sachs (OEM), Koni or other struts made for OEM style springs...

I knew I should have asked if I could get a discount!

Yeah, I'm getting really anxious. I'm borderline to ordering the Ground Control conversation kit.
