  • ST Tire choice thread

Starting this thread per Tommy's request.

We were discusing his potential tire choices for STX on his 325.

Ya, I thought I remembered you running a crappy tire size. Check out the 245/35 Falken 451's also. Shaved they might work well for you, especially the gearing. But the 235/40 shaved (must do this) Kooks should be good too.

I myself have made a tire change too. No more Falkens for me.

OK, the 235/40 Kooks are 24.4 tall, the 245/35 Falken 451's are 23.9" tall.

    Falken 451
    245/35ZR17 8.0 - 9.5 23.9 9.6 8.7
Tom Hoppe won STX on these in 2004.

    Hankook RS-2
    235/40ZR17 8.0-9.5 24.4 9.5 8.3

Haven't yet but I am leaning towards shaved Advan's in 245/40-17. Going to finish off the 615's first.

          Re: ST Tire choice thread

The Hankook RS-2 only managed 5th place in the Car & Driver tire test despite the cheapest price of all tires being factored in. The actual print article has wet & dry lap time charts and I don't have that with me, but I believe the Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 had the fasted dry lap times of all 13 tested.... "If you're looking to cut the quickest lap times while using a street tire, this is the one to have. Bring money: They're $175 apiece." (225/45-17)

That article was flawed. I would not put a lot of stock in it.

I think it is way to early to predict tires since several haven't even come out yet. As much as I hate Falkens, I couldn't pass up that $130 special. We'll buy the cheater tires next.

                  Re: ST Tire choice thread

Okay, we can argue over the rankings, but here are the hard facts on the two ST tires in question plus the BFG GeForce T/A KD (in the dry)...

                  Braking 50-0mph...
                  BFG T/A KD: 74.7'
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: 80.6'
                  Yoko Neova AD07: 69.1'

                  Autocross (seconds)
                  BFG T/A KD: 29.76
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: 29.86
                  Yoko Neova AD07: 29.66

                  Skidpad:
                  BFG T/A KD: 0.95g
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: 0.94g
                  Yoko Neova AD07: 0.94g

Dry-performance score (Top tire in each tests gets 100pts and percentage of that score for the rest)
                  BFG T/A KD: 291.7
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: 281.5
                  Yoko Neova AD07: 298.9

                  Treadwear
                  BFG T/A KD: 200
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: 200
                  Yoko Neova AD07: 180

                  Price they list for 225/45-17
                  BFG T/A KD: $169
                  Hankook RS-2 Z212: $99
                  Yoko Neova AD07: $175

No question the Hankook is a great value, but it doesn't seem to be the one to have if winning is a high priority. Unfortunately Tirerack supplied all the tires and they don't sell Falkens. Discount tire is worthless for finding tests and surveys on tires.
